The state of Kentucky has its own unique brand of financial management — and in the state’s leadership is its Finance Cabinet Secretary, who is responsible for ensuring that the Commonwealth’s finances are managed effectively and efficiently. Daniel Bork, the current Finance Cabinet Secretary, has been in this position since 2016 and has made numerous changes to the state’s financial operations since then. Under his leadership, the Commonwealth has seen a significant reduction in debt and a strong increase in revenue, while also seeing an increase in government efficiency and job creation.
Bork, who is a native Kentuckian, was appointed to the position by Governor Matt Bevin in 2016. He had previously worked in the state’s Department of Revenue, where he served as Deputy Commissioner for Taxation. In addition to his previous experience in the public sector, Bork has held private sector positions in the banking industry, most notably serving as a Senior Vice President and Regional Manager at BancorpSouth. With his background in public service, financial management, and banking, Bork was uniquely qualified to take on the role of Cabinet Secretary.
Since taking office, Bork has implemented numerous reforms to Kentucky's financial system. One of his major initiatives was the Kentucky Financial Literacy and Education Program, which is aimed at providing financial education to all Kentuckians regardless of age or income. The program has been highly successful and has helped thousands of people learn how to better manage their money. Additionally, under Bork’s leadership, the state’s debt has been reduced by over $1 billion and revenue has increased by over $2 billion.
Bork has also worked to make Kentucky’s government more efficient and to create jobs. He has pushed for greater transparency in government spending and has worked to streamline the state’s procurement process. He has also encouraged public-private partnerships, which have led to the creation of new jobs across the state.
In addition to his duties as Finance Cabinet Secretary, Bork serves on several boards, including the Kentucky Retirement Systems Board and the Kentucky Commission on Revenue Policy. He is also a member of the Council of State Governments, the National Association of State Budget Officers, and the National Association of State Auditors, Comptrollers, and Treasurers.
Bork's tenure as Cabinet Secretary has been marked by strong financial management and government reforms. His work has resulted in a stronger, more efficient Kentucky and has set the stage for the Commonwealth to continue its economic growth. As he continues to serve in this capacity, it is likely that Bork will continue to make positive changes that benefit all Kentuckians.
