The Warren G Harding Cabinet, also known as the “Ohio Gang”, has gone down in history as one of the most colorful and controversial presidential cabinets of all time. The nickname of the cabinet was derived from the fact that President Harding appointed a number of members of his inner circle, who were all from Ohio. These men included Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes, Attorney General Harry M. Daugherty and Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover.
The Ohio Gang's tenure in office is remembered as much for their scandals and mismanagement as it is for their successes. The Teapot Dome scandal, in which Secretary of the Interior Albert Fall accepted bribes to lease public oil reserves to private companies, is perhaps the most notorious scandal of the era. But the Ohio Gang was also responsible for some important foreign policy successes, such as the Washington Naval Treaty and the Kellogg-Briand Pact.
In addition to their policy successes, the Ohio Gang is remembered for the nicknames given to each member by the press. Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes was known as “Landslide Charlie” for his successful negotiation of the Washington Naval Treaty. Attorney General Harry M. Daugherty was dubbed “the Duke of Duval” for his loyalty to President Harding. Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover was nicknamed “the Great Engineer” for his role in creating a more efficient federal bureaucracy. Other members of the cabinet included Andrew Mellon as Secretary of the Treasury, Edwin Denby as Secretary of the Navy, and Henry Wallace as Secretary of Agriculture.
The Ohio Gang's legacy is mixed. While they achieved some important policy successes, they are mostly remembered for their scandals and mismanagement. However, the nicknames they acquired during their tenure remain as a reminder of the colorful personalities of the members of the Warren G Harding Cabinet.
